What is the client portal?

Updated Oct 11, 2026

A portal is a separate front door for the people you work for, rather than with. Clients sign in and see records that belong to them — and nothing else.

Why not just invite them?

A workspace member sees a workspace: spaces, sheets, other people's work. That is right for colleagues and wrong for clients.

Portal users are different:

  • They see only their own records.
  • They never browse your spaces, sheets or views.
  • They take no seat and cost nothing.

What a portal is good for

  • Status without status meetings — clients check progress themselves.
  • Requests — clients raise work where it lands directly in your system.
  • Documents and deliverables in one place they can find later.

How it fits together

Your data stays in your sheets, as it already is. The portal is a lens onto it, scoped per customer. Nothing is duplicated, and nothing has to be exported and sent.

Portal users are not members

They do not appear in Settings → Users and are managed separately — which is also why they do not affect your bill.
